She enjoys her work for hours, while standing and diligently fixing the strands of clay at the age of 74, with a smile on the serene face at pottery workshop of Bharat Bhawan, Bhopal.
Nirmala Sharma is a perfect epitome of ‘Zest for life’. I bumped into her in 2016 while entour to Bhopal and whosoever meets her or get to know about her bows down with respect and heart gets filled with love.
When asked how she manages to work so hard, she answers in a low, smiling manner that she is defying age and time. One gets astonished while watching her bake ‘matti‘ artifacts at 750*F.
Her passion for artifacts is her only ‘world‘ in this world.Her only son, an army personnel was killed in Kashmir in 1994, who was posthumously conferred Kirti Chakra. Her husband also left for heavenly abode long back.
She is truly the mother of Bhopal city who arranges in memory of her son Annual Charity Exhibition of artifacts for the welfare of army personnel and invited as guest of honour on every national festival or army functions.
Her association with clay was a chance encounter in 1986 when she was transferred as PGT (Economics) to KV, Bairagarh, Bhopal. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise for her as she didn’t succumb to depression after the death of her young son subsequently losing her son. After that she never looked back and continues to experiment with ‘matti‘ giving workshops, carrying on with innumerable solo or joint exhibitions in almost every city of India even, has friends of each age group in every city. The warmth and fragrance of her love lingers on and stays with every connected soul.
